Meet Dr. Morton Kehlenberg

Thanks for giving us the honor of featuring you and your practice Dr. Kahlenberg. I know you and I go WAY back but I’d love to introduce you to our community as well! Let’s start at the beginning, what is the name of your practice and where is it located?

The name of my practice is Surgical Oncology Associates of South Texas. My offices are located in Stone Oak in the Atrium at North Central Baptist Hospital and in the medical office building adjacent to Northeast Baptist Hospital off highway 410.

I love that your geographical reach covers such a large area of northern San Antonio! What inspired you to pursue a career in medicine, what drives your passion?

A career in medicine offered me the opportunity to marry my interest in science and my desire to impact people’s lives. My passion is driven by the benefits that surgery and other cancer treatments provide for patients dramatically altering their lives.

How did you decide to specialize in surgical oncology?

Cancer prevention and treatment strategies are complex and patients facing the diagnosis of cancer are so deserving of expert care. Surgical oncology, the surgical treatment of cancer, offers the ability to cure many patients.

It’s such a unique calling to work with patients when they are facing a very difficult time in their lives. I’ve always been so impressed with your kind and compassionate interactions with patients and their families.

What do you think makes your practice unique?

My practice is dedicated to the surgical prevention and treatment of patients with cancer, unlike other surgery practices that offer many non-cancer procedures. We offer a personalized comprehensive approach to patient care. All cancer patients are unique.

I think that’s an important differentiator because you have immense depth in oncologic diagnoses that a general surgeon may not. And I imagine you’ve seen just about every diagnosis over the span of your career!

If you could make one change to the healthcare system, what would it be?

Develop a resource pool of funds so that all deserving patients can receive care.

That seems to be a common sentiment from the physicians we’ve interviewed for the More Than Medicine series. The healthcare industry is so complex and unfortunately sometimes the patient gets lost in the mix.

Let’s get a little personal, what are some hobbies that bring you joy or help you unwind?

I enjoy automobile detailing and minor car maintenance. There is something very therapeutic that comes from cleaning and waxing a car.

I had no idea but somehow that doesn’t surprise me! I would imagine that you are just as meticulous with a car as you are with your surgical approach and bedside manner!

What’s one thing most people might not know about you?

I am a proud father and grandfather.

And you have children that are also entering into the field of medicine! Congratulations on building a beautiful family and I hope you get to especially enjoy your time as a grandfather.

Do you have anything coming up in 2026 that you’d like to highlight?

As the Baptist Health System’s Medical Director of Cancer Services and the Baptist Breast Network, I am helping to expand nurse navigation services for my patients.

You and I both know how critical nurse navigation is to a patient’s journey. Thank you for your never-ending passion for serving those facing a cancer diagnosis and for your hard work to create better systems of care. Thank you for taking the time to visit with me today!

Meet Dr. Gil Villanueva

Today I’m joined by Dr. Gil Villanueva, who has practiced obstetrics and gynecology for 30 years and recently transitioned to a direct-care model that allowed expansion of his practice to include primary care and more comprehensive women’s health.

Thank you for taking the time to share more about your unique approach to medicine! What is the name of your practice and where is it located?

Thanks for having me! The name of my practice is Gil R. Villanueva, MD, PA and is located at 1162 E. Sonterra Blvd, Suite 110, San Antonio, TX, 78258.

Having been in healthcare for close to 20 years, I’ve known ‘of’ you but I’m excited to know more ‘about’ you. What inspired you to pursue a career in medicine, what drives your passion?

Like most physicians, I originally went into medicine because I was fascinated by the human body.

I’ve always been fascinated by how well designed the body is and the natural curiosity that comes with understanding what happens when something goes wrong. I’ve especially enjoyed the “Sherlock Holmes” side of medicine – the process of piecing together clues, thinking logically, and working to understand the root cause of what’s really happening.

What has truly driven my passion over the years is the relationships built with patients. Being part of their healing journey and sharing in important moments in their lives is what continues to make medicine meaningful and fulfilling for me.

I love that you have such a focus on the whole patient and how their health can impact every aspect of their lives. How did you decide to specialize in women’s health?

Obstetrics and gynecology drew me in because it offered so many different roles at once. I could perform surgery, deliver babies, and care for patients in the office as their physician. It’s a field with many dimensions, from the unpredictability of obstetrics to the intensity of surgery, while also allowing you to walk with women through some of the most important moments of their lives. Those experiences create deep, lasting relationships with patients, which is something I’ve always valued.

Knowing that your practice is structured differently than most, what do you think makes your practice unique?

My focus has shifted toward caring for the whole woman, rather than just one part of her health, outside the constraints of the traditional insurance model. I’m able to support women through every stage of life and look at the bigger picture when it comes to their overall well-being.

What I enjoy most is building a comprehensive wellness plan that is tailored to each patient’s needs. I also understand that many women spend so much time caring for others that their own health often gets pushed aside, so part of my role is helping them stay accountable and making themselves a priority.

I know first hand how easy it is to fall into that routine! And women are commonly the healthcare decision-makers for their families, so the emphasis on education and prevention can be life-saving. What are some hobbies that bring you joy or help you unwind?

I grew up in the country hunting, fishing, and camping and the outdoors still feels like home to me. There’s a kind of peace you only find far from the noise of the world, sometimes a hundred miles from the nearest person—where you can simply be surrounded by nature’s quiet beauty.

One of my favorite experiences is standing under a night sky untouched by city lights. When the stars appear in full brilliance, it’s impossible not to feel the vastness and wonder of the universe—it always takes my breath away.

Do you have anything coming up in 2026 that you’d like to highlight?

One of the things I’m really excited about this year is spending more time educating women about the importance of comprehensive wellness. I have several talks and seminars planned with different women’s organizations around San Antonio where I’ll be speaking about women’s health and long-term wellness.

But on a more personal level, I’m also very excited about settling into my new office space. My goal was to create a place where patients feel like they’ve stepped into a calm, welcoming environment—almost like a retreat or an oasis. More than anything, I’m looking forward to continuing to serve my patients and giving them the kind of thoughtful, personal care they deserve.

I have a feeling that 2026 will have lots of good things in store for you! Thank you for giving us a peek into your practice and your personality!

Meet Dr. Niti Vanee

I’m so excited to dive into iGenomeDx and the incredible work that you and your team are doing. But before we do…congratulations on winning the 2025 NAWBO Women Business Owner of the Year award as well as the 2026 San Antonio Business Journal 40 Under 40 Award! Both so well deserved!

Okay, back to business, can you tell me about iGenomeDx? When did it start and what does it do?

iGenomeDx was founded in 2016 to expand access to precision medicine. We are a Texas-based, CLIA-certified and COLA-accredited molecular diagnostic lab specializing in pharmacogenomics, infectious disease testing, and toxicology. Our goal is to provide clinicians with clear genetic data that supports better treatment decisions.

Adverse drug reactions remain a major healthcare issue, contributing to over 1 million emergency visits annually in the U.S. Molecular diagnostics can help reduce that burden through informed prescribing and earlier detection.

Another congratulations on achieving 10 years in operation! Now, some people say you shouldn’t mix business with pleasure, what is it like owning a business with your spouse?

Building iGenomeDx with my spouse, Dr. Pramod Mishra has been one of the greatest professional privileges of my life. We bring complementary strengths. Clear communication and defined roles are essential. We respect each other’s expertise. Most importantly, we share a commitment to improving healthcare in our community.

What inspired you to pursue a career in healthcare? What drives your passion?

Healthcare combines science, service, and impact. Molecular diagnostics helps move care beyond symptom management toward root cause insight. What drives me most is seeing measurable results, especially when pharmacogenomic guidance helps improve a patient’s outcome. I feel fortunate to contribute to the continued growth of precision medicine.

Pharmacogenomics is a hot topic right now. What is it and why?

Pharmacogenomics studies how genetic differences influence the way individuals respond to medications. Research shows that nearly 90% of people carry at least one genetic variant that may affect how they metabolize commonly prescribed drugs.

Pharmacogenomic testing helps identify which medications may be more effective and which may carry a higher risk of side effects, supporting safer prescribing and better treatment outcomes. .

Is pharmacogenomics available to patients?

Yes. Pharmacogenomic testing is widely available through healthcare providers.

At iGenomeDx, the test is non-invasive and performed using a simple cheek swab.

Results are typically available within a few days and include a detailed clinical interpretation to assist prescribing decisions. Most insurance plans provide coverage when medically necessary. For patients paying out of pocket, we offer transparent self-pay pricing at $300.

You’re doing so much professionally, what are some hobbies or passions outside of work?

I am a mother of two young children. Much of my joy comes from being present with them.

I also value reading, travel, and early morning reflection routines. Leadership requires perspective and balance. These moments help me stay grounded and grateful.

Do you have anything coming up in 2026 that you would like to highlight?

San Antonio continues to grow as one of the most dynamic healthcare markets in the country. In 2026, my primary focus is to expand the access to pharmacogenomic testing within the San Antonio community and support local healthcare practices in optimizing medication management through precision medicine. We want to ensure that innovative tools are not limited to large academic centers but are available to everyday clinicians and their patients.

On a personal level, I will also be stepping into a leadership role with two nonprofit organizations dedicated to education and community engagement. This aligns closely with both my professional mission and personal values.

We are proud of what we have built since 2016, and deeply grateful for the trust of our partners and community. At the same time, we are energized by what lies ahead. Precision medicine is advancing quickly, and our responsibility is to ensure that innovation translates into real impact for the patients and providers who need it most.

Meet Natasha

It was so great to recently meet you Natasha, and I’m so excited about your practice opening a location in Boerne. When we met it felt like we had known each other for years!

What is the name of your practice and where is it located?

My practice is called Story of US Therapy and I have locations in Boerne and Helotes.

Congratulations on expanding to multiple locations! The need for mental health services seems to be at an all-time high right now. What inspired you to pursue a career in mental health, what drives your passion?

My inspiration to pursue marriage and family therapy wasn’t a single defining moment, but a story that is still being written—a story authored by pivotal relationships and formative experiences, both difficult and beautiful. Without these chapters to teach me the challenges that come with life, I do not believe I would be able to show up as a wounded healer.

Wow, a wounded healer, that’s powerful. I love that you’ve synthesized your personal experience with your passion for others. Are there specific types of therapy you specialize in?

I chose to specialize in relationships because I have witnessed firsthand the profound impact of healthy connections, as well as the detrimental effects of problematic ones. I believe that relationships are central to our well-being and that nurturing them is essential for a fulfilling life.

That’s so true. I’ve even seen studies that show people with more connection in their lives have improved cardiovascular health and a longer lifespan. With the diversity of mental health practices in the market, what do you think makes your practice unique?

At Story of Us Therapy, it’s the energy. I encourage everyone to be their true selves because people notice when you’re not authentic.

Our space in Boerne is also very unique and colorful.

The culture in Boerne is definitely different than it is in San Antonio! Thinking more nationally, if you could make one change to the healthcare system, what would it be?

The ability for everyone to access healthcare, especially those with limited financial means, would be one change I would like to see in the healthcare system. Everyone deserves access to quality care and the ability to find a provider who resonates with them.

I agree, having good synergy between the patient and the provider can make all the difference. Collaboration, compliance and trust all improve when there is a good match. Let’s get a little personal, what are some hobbies that bring you joy or help you unwind?

My hobbies are probably not too surprising given my background: as a former personal trainer, working out is definitely my number one way to unwind and recharge. But on the flip side, I have a bit of a secret thrill-seeker side—I absolutely love driving fast with the top down and the music cranked up loud!

What’s one thing most people might not know about you?

Most people may not know I have stage fright. I can talk all day, one-on-one, but speaking to a group makes my heart beat out of my chest!

You have such a big personality and exude confidence, I’m surprised to hear that you have stage fright! But I can relate, I get nervous speaking to large audiences as well.

Do you have anything coming up in 2026 that you’d like to highlight?

The biggest thing I have coming up in 2026 is an effort to really get to know the Boerne community. We recently opened our office here, and I’m excited to connect with the people and families in this area. Building relationships within the community is a priority for me as we settle into our new space.

I hope you find the Boerne community as welcoming as I have. It’s an area that is definitely built on tradition and the strong foundation of relationships. I’m excited to introduce you and The Story of US to some of my connections!

Meet Dr. Sara Hamilton

The Bariatric Counseling Center (BCC) is a one-ofakind resource for behavioral healthcare for obesity and weight loss. It takes a truly revolutionary approach to helping clients achieve their goals through group and individual therapy, dietary guidance, cooking classes, chef-prepared meals, mindful eating and movement education – all in one place!

Dr. Sara Hamilton is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and the Clinical Director at the BCC.

Thank you for taking the time Dr. Hamilton! Can you tell me about your background and training?

Thanks for asking me to contribute! I went to college at Occidental College in Los Angeles and majored in psychology. As part of my education I worked with kids and teens with autism, ADHD and reactive attachment disorder. I also participated in the Semester at Sea program my junior year and spent 3 months on a ship, sailing around the world. I took my clinical psychology class on board and had amazing opportunities to learn about mental health and mental illness in many countries. Before I decided to go to grad school to be a psychologist, I took a year off just to make sure I was ready to do another five years of school! During that time I worked at a group home for teenage girls and completed a program through the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). That solidified that I was passionate about working in mental health and I moved to Chicago to attend The Chicago School of Professional Psychology.

While I was there, I trained in private practice, university counseling, and psychiatric hospital settings and completed my dissertation “Teaching Mindful Eating to Children: A Program to Prevent and Treat Childhood Obesity”. I also discovered my passion for psychoanalytic and psychodynamic theories and completed a fellowship with the Chicago Center for Psychoanalysis. I accepted an offer to train at San Antonio State Hospital for my final year and I have been in Texas ever since.

Since graduating I have worked in private practice and intensive outpatient settings, spending most of my career at the Bariatric Counseling Center, where
I am the Clinical Director and primarily do individual and group therapy.

Okay, I thought I knew a lot about you but I had no idea you were such a world traveler! Those experiences sound transformational and BCC is so lucky that you settled here. What drove your passion to become a psychologist?

Clinical psychology appealed to me because I see good psychotherapy as the artful application of a science. I love information, science, and research, and I also love to think creatively and abstractly; clinical psychology allows me to engage with others in both concrete and expansive ways. My own good therapy experiences motivated me to join the field to help others learn the tools they could use to help themselves. Seeing people more fully become themselves through therapy is a privilege I get to experience every day.

And then what led you into the world of behavioral healthcare for obesity and weight loss?

I became more interested in working with eating behaviors during my first training placement when I ran a small group that discussed the book “Women, Food and God” by Geneen Roth. One of the women in the group said that she didn’t know what hungry or full felt like and it struck me that many of us can no longer hear what our bodies tell us because of how we are so inundated with food messaging and “food products” that can distort our bodies’ signals. This was the seed for my dissertation, which has served as the basis of my work for most of my career.

I care very strongly for people experiencing obesity. This is one of the most stigmatized groups worldwide, likely because it is one that people often unabashedly criticize. That discrimination is built into the very systems that are purporting to help people treat obesity, in ways that often exacerbate the disease process. I think clinical psychology and other sociological and behavioral health disciplines bring important perspectives to how the world thinks about people experiencing obesity and unique tools to help support people who want to change their behaviors. I am passionate about helping people to address internalized fat phobia and to learn to care for themselves in ways that are not rooted in calorie reduction.

It’s really inspiring to see how protective you are of people experiencing obesity and how broadly you think about the systems that impact people with obesity and how proactively you are helping them to respond to these systems.

Can you share a little about the Bariatric Counseling Center?

The Bariatric Counseling Center (BCC) was created in 2016 to serve people experiencing obesity in a new way, working from a behavioral health lens with a particular focus on eating disorders. At BCC, we work with clients who have tried everything in the weight loss world but have not seen the results they want. Our clients include folks who have had bariatric surgery, are planning to have it, people seeking behavioral obesity treatment without medical or surgical intervention, people on weight loss medications, and people who just want to change their habits. We work with people who struggle with binge eating, chronic overeating, and chronic emotional eating. We also work with people who have lost weight and are seeking to maintain their weight loss and those whose mental health conditions are contributing to difficulty with changing eating behaviors.

Our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), covered by insurance, offers a unique, behavioral approach led by mental health professionals and dietitians. Rather than prescribing diets we help clients change thoughts, feelings, and behaviors to create sustainable lifestyle change. Over roughly three months, clients attend three weekly three-hour sessions that include group therapy, individualized counseling, culinary lessons, movement classes, and dietary and nursing support.

We take a whole-person view—looking at home, work, relationships, mental health, and daily routines—to help identify where meaningful change can happen. While the time commitment is different from traditional weight-loss programs, the structure builds community, reduces stigma, and offers a supportive environment where clients can grow, connect, and have fun while working toward long-term well-being.

The BCC program is truly unique and there is no other program like it in Texas. I commend BCC for addressing overall health and long-term change.

Do you have anything coming up in 2026 that you’d like to highlight?

I’m so excited to be hosting a 5 day mindfulness retreat with Ranchlands at the Paint Rock Canyon in Wyoming in August of 2026 (https://ranchlands.com/pages/how-to-pay-attention-with-dr-sara-hamilton). I was a guest there this fall at a retreat and am thrilled to be invited to host my own retreat next year. My time there brought me back to my true self and I hope to create an opportunity for others to do the same. The retreat is called “How to Pay Attention” and will use mindfulness and art activities to help support all of us in renewing our capacity to be present in our lives and be less connected to our phones. No better place to do that than while horseback riding and glamping out in such a beautiful setting!

DeZavala – Shavano Park – Stone Oak – South San Antonio

This feature is unique in that we’re talking about not one, but four FYZICAL locations in the San Antonio Area Region. Dr. Paul Cink is the Area Representative and will share with us the foundation of the FYZICAL mission, what drives the team’s passion and what’s coming up in 2026! Dr. Cink is a Board Certified Otolaryngologist and the owner of the FYZICAL DeZavala location. Other clinics include Stone Oak, Shavano Park and South San Antonio. With more coming soon!

Thanks for taking the time Dr. Cink. To start, tell me about FYZICAL and what makes it unique.

Fyzical Therapy and Balance Centers are a national network of physical therapy clinics that specialize in balance therapy alongside traditional orthopedic and neurological rehabilitation. Fyzical is recognized, in particular, as a leader in balance and vestibular rehabilitation, helping patients with dizziness, vertigo, and fall risks. These areas are often underserved in traditional physical therapy clinics. These clinics use advanced diagnostic tools and proprietary protocols, including state-of-the-art equipment like Safety Overhead Support (SOS) systems, which allow patients to safely practice balance without fear of falling.

Each patient receives a customized treatment plan tailored to their unique needs and goals. There is no “one-size-fits-all” approach. Instead, therapy is highly individualized.

Comprehensive services include – vestibular rehabilitation, orthopedic rehab, neurological therapy including stroke, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, neuropathy, long Covid, Multiple Sclerosis, etc. Pelvic health therapy is in increasing demand for both women and men. Additionally, fitness and wellness programs are offered at many locations. Fyzical’s philosophy is to treat the whole person, not just the injury. Their programs aim to restore function, improve mobility, and enhance overall well-being, helping patients “Love Their Life” again.

Fyzical operates as a franchise model, so each center is locally owned and operated, allowing for more personalized service and community connection. Therefore, as a nationally recognized company with over 600 locations nationwide, Fyzical combines the resources of the national network with the expertise and care of local providers.

In summary, Fyzical offers a unique approach to therapeutic needs and a comprehensive, patient-centered path to better movement and quality of life.

I love the focus on balance and I think it’s something people take for granted, especially in terms of how it can relate to mobility and longevity. And the offering of so many other services enables FYZICAL to meet the needs of every patient.

What is the passion driving the care FYZICAL provides patients?

The passion driving the care at FYZICAL is rooted in our philosophy to treat the whole person, not just the injury. FYZICAL’S mission is to restore function, improve mobility, and enhance a patient’s overall wellbeing. Our slogan of “LOVE YOUR LIFE” again speaks deeply to our patients who are truly trying to regain independence, confidence, and quality of life. Our therapists are sincerely passionate about empowering patients and supporting them through every step of their recovery journey. Our commitment goes beyond physical rehabilitation. We are ultimately trying to help patients reconnect with life activities that matter the most to them! That connection to purpose is so important in motivating patients to put in the work. Kudos on continuing to focus on overall well-being and not getting caught up in the grind that other specialties have fallen victim to in healthcare.

We know there are five FYZICAL locations in the San Antonio Area Region and you’re the Area Representative. What exactly does that mean? The “Area Representative” is a designation that FYZICAL corporate gives to an individual or entity that has purchased a territory to “represent” to the corporate company. This representation involves developing that territory with new clinics. There are specific marketing requirements and support the AR needs to do to ensure the success of the territory and its ultimate growth. ARs have special meetings with other ARs throughout the country as well as with corporate headquarters. ARs are thought to be the special “spearheads” of overall company growth.

Sounds like a big role! Given that FYZICAL is one of the nation’s fastest growing physical therapy franchises, having an Area Representative seems like a great way to provide collaboration between the locations. Knowing that all of the locations have a focus on balance, do any of the FYZICAL locations also offer unique services?

All of the FYZICAL locations offer comprehensive orthopedic services for sports injuries and chronic physical dysfunctions. Some of the unique services that several clinics offer are: pelvic health therapy, occupational therapy, neurological dysfunction therapy for conditions such as stroke, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, neuropathy, long Covid, and Multiple Sclerosis, balance and vestibular rehabilitation for patients with dizziness and vertigo and those with fall risks, and fitness and wellness programs.

How do you think FYZICAL is different from other physical therapy clinics?

FYZICAL seems to be completely different from traditional outpatient physical therapy clinics. Our main differentiator is our national recognition for balance and vestibular rehabilitation. 30-35% of adults in the US report problems with dizziness and vestibular dysfunction. This huge population is in desperate need of therapy for these symptoms. FYZICAL is dedicated to serving this demand with specified programs tailored to each patient’s particular needs.

Additionally, we take great pride in our approach to treating the whole patient to improve their overall quality of life!

I love that patients can find the exact therapy they need and stay within the FYZICAL family of providers. In closing, do you all have anything coming up in 2026 that you’d like to highlight?

FYZICAL is always seeking new and better ways to treat patients’ concerns and keep people moving. Beyond the usual physical and occupational therapies we currently use, we continue to explore new methodologies including extended health and wellness strategies. These may include therapeutic yoga, stretch, massage, and fitness programs. Patients are usually frustrated when they reach their insurance limits on their plan of care. Therefore, we are constantly looking for ways to help patients maintain the progress they have made during their treatment plan. Discounted cash-based programs can help patients maintain their level of movement and greatly enhance their quality of life!

Thank you for sharing so much great information about what makes FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Centers unique in their approach to patient care.

I’m excited to introduce you to Salveo Direct Care’s newest physician, Dr. Sharvari Parghi. Dr. Parghi is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Pediatrics and Lifestyle Medicine and has cared for patients in the San Antonio community for almost 20 years. And I’ve known her for all 20 of them!

Dr. Parghi has a mission of providing personalized, compassionate care to her patients, which aligns perfectly with Salveo’s mission of not only improving patients’ health, but also their wellness. Let’s get to know more about Dr. Parghi and this new chapter!

What does joining the Salveo Direct Care team mean to you?

Being a part of Salveo Direct Care allows me to practice the kind of comprehensive, holistic primary care that I was trained in and, more importantly, truly passionate about. It’s incredibly rewarding to build authentic, meaningful connections with my patients, and to have the ability to fully advocate for their medical needs. This is the true fulfillment I find in my practice.

In traditional healthcare settings, the pressures of excessive paperwork, administrative tasks, and patient volume often hinder the depth of care I strive to provide. These challenges, compounded by the complexities of insurance, can detract from my ability to focus on what matters most: improving patients’ overall health and prioritizing disease prevention. By removing these burdens, I am able to devote my attention to fostering long-term health, rather than just managing acute issues or disease states.

The direct care movement is certainly gaining momentum in San Antonio and across the nation. And it’s not hard to see why!

What inspired you to pursue a career in medicine, what drives your passion?

My passion for medicine began with a deep fascination for the science behind it. The complexities of biology and human physiology captivated me, and I found great satisfaction in the challenge of diagnosing difficult cases. However, as I progressed in my career, I came to realize that while arriving at an accurate diagnosis is important, it is only part of the equation. True fulfillment in medicine comes from building meaningful connections with patients, empowering them to take charge of their health, and advocating for their well-being in a holistic and supportive way.

How has your perspective evolved over the years? Would you choose the same specialty if you had it to do over?

My perspective on medicine has evolved over time. While doctors have always excelled in science and patient care, we have, to some extent, neglected our role in advocacy, lobbying, and business management. In focusing so deeply on clinical practice, we have overlooked the power of our collective voice in driving meaningful change at the public health and policy levels. There’s an opportunity for us to come together and make significant strides in improving healthcare on a larger scale.

If I had to choose again, I would still pursue the same specialty, but I would seek to be more involved in public policy and advocacy. I believe we need to prioritize preventive health, wellness, and social/emotional well-being just as much as we focus on treating medical conditions. Achieving this shift in focus would require a significant paradigm change, but I am optimistic that it is a shift we are capable of making.

That’s something we say all the time, they don’t teach business in medical school. It’s admirable that you see and are passionate about advocating for the greater good.

Speaking of greater good, if you could make one significant change to the healthcare system, what would it be?

As I mentioned earlier, I believe our focus in healthcare should shift from “disease care” to a true emphasis on “health care.” We need to prioritize lifestyle changes—such as exercise, diet, and mental well-being—valuing them just as much as tertiary care and specialized procedures. Along with this shift in focus, it’s crucial that reimbursement and cost models also reflect this priority, ensuring that preventive care and overall wellness are properly supported and incentivized. By adopting this approach, we can create a more sustainable and holistic model of health that emphasizes prevention, long-term wellness, and overall quality of life.

What are some hobbies or passions outside of medicine that bring you joy or help you unwind?

In my free time, I enjoy staying active through running, yoga, and hiking. I also have a passion for reading, baking, and exploring Indian cultural activities. Above all, I cherish spending quality time with my family.

Dr. Monica is also an avid runner – maybe you and she can start marathoning together!

What’s one thing that many people may not know about you?

After completing my residency, my husband and I made the bold decision to sell our home and car, and spent a year backpacking around the world. During this time, we had the incredible opportunity to participate in medical missions, which was both professionally and personally enriching.

After all these years, I definitely didn’t know that about you and Dr. Patel! That sounds like an amazing experience. Do you have anything coming up in 2025 that you’d like to highlight?

I aspire to develop seminars focused on women’s fitness, health, strength training, and nutrition, with the goal of empowering women to take control of their well-being through education and practical guidance.

Love that! It’s so needed and I anticipate it would be in high demand. Thanks for taking the time to let us get to know you and congratulations on your new journey with Salveo Direct Care!

The post More Than Medicine: Meet Dr. Sharvari Parghi first appeared on Waechter Consulting.

Today we’re spending time with the dynamic duo behind SegerMD, Dr. Michael ‘Mickey’ and Dr. Jenny Seger! With a shared passion for weight management and optimal health, the Segers are providing surgical and non-surgical resources for patients in San Antonio and beyond. Both having practiced independently for many years, they recently joined forces and are taking the market by storm!

Drs. Seger will take us through what it’s like to start a business with your spouse, what fuels their passion for medicine and big things happening for each of them in 2025. And, did you know Dr. Mickey once got fired?

Before we get to that, let’s start at the beginning. What is it like to go into business with your spouse?

Dr. Jenny: Anyone who tells you it’s a walk in the park is likely not being completely transparent. While it has been mostly exciting, it does require a couple to dig deep in terms of communication. As parents of 5 children, we’ve learned that we will not always agree and that is true when it comes to business as well. Thankfully, we have a strong mutual respect and admiration for one another which allows us to maximize our strengths and lean in when one of us is feeling challenged. Better Together!

Dr. Mickey: Absolutely amazing and terrifying! Starting a new practice in our 50s was not on my bingo card. I tend to have all these creative yet sometimes diverging and whacky ideas about what direction I want to go in but at the end of the day the deep trust and love I have for Jenny and her path keeps me grounded.

There is no doubt that having 5 children (including a set of twins) gave you some good practice on communication and compromise!

It sounds like you compliment each other and bring opposing strengths to marriage, parenting and business. If you think back to the beginning, what inspired you to pursue a career in medicine and what drives your passion?

Dr. Jenny: For me, it was my love of science, problem solving, interpersonal relations and the desire to help others. Medicine seemed to be the perfect blend of each of these areas of interest and strengths.

Dr. Mickey: I just love people. Helping people solve problems, especially the frustrating challenging ones, is a big driver for me. Surgery specifically gave me the opportunity to combine the mental aspects with actually creating a physical change in someone’s life to help them solve a problem.

How has your perspective evolved over the years? Would you choose the same speciality if you had to do it over?

Dr. Jenny: So interesting you ask…I truly believe I would. I know many of my colleagues who discourage their kids to pursue medicine but that is NEVER about the actual practice of medicine but rather, about the BUSINESS of medicine which has truly become quite the mess. I tend to be optimistic and think that the greater good will prevail. If you take out the BUSINESS side of things, practicing medicine is extraordinarily rewarding. I LOVE what I do!

Dr. Mickey: It would be easy for someone to say no. Medicine has become very system oriented and the old days of the doctor patient relationship being at the center of healthcare are largely gone. Still this is the very heartbeat of what needs to happen to deliver the best care to people.

Physicians, typically not good business people, have seen this corporatization erode our importance in the system steadily over time.It is on us to figure out a way to change this. After all, people don’t want to seek a doctor based on what their corporate or hospital affiliation is. People are seeking a relationship with someone who truly cares for them and will invest time, thought and energy into helping them be healthier. This is where the power is and docs just need to reinvent the system where people can choose this.

I love that you have both stayed so patient oriented and remain optimistic about the future of healthcare. If you could make one significant change to the healthcare system, what would it be?

Dr. Jenny: If I could change one thing in our current healthcare system, it would be that EVERY SINGLE PERSON would have access to quality healthcare. It’s heartbreaking that in a country as great as the United States, we cannot guarantee affordable, quality healthcare for all.
(and…I’d clean up the ‘mess’ in the business of medicine)

Dr. Mickey: We are seeing the best and brightest choose non-medical paths at alarming rates. It makes no sense to do 4 years of college, 4 years of medical school, then 3-7 years of residency or fellowship training to then be employed and have a massive amount of debt. In time our system will not have the same level of providers. We need to find a way to reinvent the system where these young talented people who have a servant heart are once again able to see a path that rewards them for a career in medicine. AI is already a big player and can reduce some of the time and cost needed to train people. It seems daunting, but I’m hopeful we can get there. And you’re right, we are only seeing the beginning of what AI may bring to the table.

Outside of medicine, what are some hobbies or passions that bring you joy or help you unwind?

Dr. Jenny: I love spending time with my amazing family, but I bet everyone says that. I enjoy being outdoors…hiking, gardening, walking on the beach and hunting for seashells…anything really. I dabble in arts and crafts but have not found any particular media that I excel at so I keep trying new things. I love live music, especially when it involves acoustical renditions.

Dr. Mickey: I am a bit of a meathead on the hobby front right now. I love fishing and watching my Texas Longhorns. I am trying to get back into playing golf. I wanted to play tennis and pickleball but my knees do not like it when I try things like that. I also have a guitar. I got fired by my instructor for not practicing enough. I hope to learn to play at some point.

I can’t believe your instructor fired you! But I can relate, I had big plans to learn to play the guitar as well and only made it through two lessons. Maybe we can learn together!

What’s one thing many people may not know about you?

Dr. Jenny: I’m pretty introverted! From an early age I learned that it pays off to be friendly and outgoing so I have always done my best to do just that, but the secret is…I am (almost always) looking forward to some quiet time alone to collect my thoughts.

Dr. Mickey: My current motto is “Your true worth is determined by how much more you give in value than you take in payment.” This is from a book called the Go.

And, let’s turn the tables a bit. What’s one thing that many people may not know about your spouse?

Dr. Jenny: He’s pretty much a ‘you get what you see’ kind of guy. He has an amazing dry sense of humor (which not everyone gets or has the patience to get to know) but if you do, you soon realize that he is incredibly loyal, and reliable… would do absolutely anything for family or friends. Truly genuine in all that he does.

Dr. Mickey: She is a beautiful dreamer. Her mind is amazingly complex and is always working on how to make this world a better place.

You both have a good heart and I admire all the good you’re doing for your patients. Do you have anything coming up in 2025 that you’d like to highlight?

Dr. Jenny: Well… I am currently pursuing my certification through the Menopause Society and in Lipidology. As a Family Medicine doc at heart, you have to make choices in terms of your areas of expertise…in addition to furthering my reach with Obesity Medicine these are two other areas where I see a major disconnect between the science/research and what is being practiced in clinical medicine. I hope to make a greater impact through my enhanced knowledge and expertise in these areas.

Dr. Mickey: Yep! I am currently focusing on clinical research. I have done about 7 trials so far and have found amazing personal growth and satisfaction learning new concepts but most importantly helping to advance the field and bring products and therapies to help people in the future. As hard I can work in my practice I can only help the folks in my sphere. By participating in research I am able to help so many more people that I will never meet! I love this!

Sounds like big things are coming soon! Thanks so much for taking the time to share your story with me. I can’t wait to see what’s next for you both and for SegerMD!

The post More Than Medicine: The Dynamic Duo: Seger MD first appeared on Waechter Consulting.

Dr. Anna Raju is a girl after my own heart -healthcare and plants! If you know me, you know I’m fully in my houseplant and gardening era and, as it turns out, she is too!

When she’s not at the Botanical Gardens, Dr. Raju is living out her passion for medicine as a pediatric urologist. And this is going to be a big year for Dr. Raju and her partners as they launch a brand new practice, Pediatric Urology of San Antonio!

I’m excited to spend time with Dr. Anna Raju – let’s dive in!

Let’s start at the beginning, what inspired you to pursue a career in medicine, what drives your passion?

Dr. Raju: I was inspired to pursue a career in medicine by watching my father help people through some of the most difficult moments of their lives. His passion for medicine was contagious and was my first inspiration. What drives my passion has evolved over the years. With age comes different experiences in life, and each step has opened my mind and been an opportunity for growth, to gain perspective, and connect with patients and my co-workers on a different level. When I first started practicing, I was very focused on ensuring I was doing the best job and refining my craft. As I progressed, gained experience and confidence, and had my own children, I hit a point where I started to connect to people on a whole new level, which I hadn’t experienced before. The connections that I feel I am now able to make with families opened a whole new beautiful experience to me that I didn’t even know could exist. Practicing medicine in today’s atmosphere has a lot of challenges and it can be very hard sometimes. It is not always easy, but as I get to know my patients and their families more, and am able to carry them through part of their health journey, the healing process becomes bidirectional. It made me realize there truly is an art to medicine. I still have much more growing and evolving to do and I look forward to this now more than ever. It is a very humbling experience and each day I am so grateful for the skills I have, and for the families I serve.

I love that you were inspired by your father and also hearing how your approach has changed over the course of your career. Healthcare in today’s environment could certainly use more physicians that prioritize connecting with patients and their families. You’ve experienced quite the personal evolution, how has your perspective evolved over the years? Would you choose the same speciality if you had it to do over?

Dr. Raju: My perspective has definitely changed over the years. I am very fortunate to be in a practice with partners who understand my desire to attempt to find work – life balance. In a surgical subspeciality practice, especially for a female, that is often easier said than done.

I love what I do and wouldn’t change my decision. However, I love learning new things! Now and then I do attend conferences in areas that are not related to my specialty.

That takes so much courage! And what a blessing to have the support of your work partners. If you could make one significant change to the healthcare system, what would it be?

Dr. Raju: I wish the focus of healthcare was on supporting practitioners to do the best possible job for their patients and supporting patients through their health, in good and challenging times. I wish we could bring back the human aspect to healthcare. I also feel there needs to be better support for health care workers at all levels of the health care team, from the medical assistants to the surgeons. If we want to do our best for patients, we as a community need to do our best for every member of the team as well.

I think that was something that was highlighted more than ever during the COVID pandemic. One blessing that came of that time might be the increased appreciation for the healthcare team. What advice would you give to young physicians or those considering a career in medicine?

Dr. Raju: As corny as this sounds, cherish this knowledge you are given. It is truly a gift and a privilege to learn these skills. Keep yourself grounded in love. Love yourself, love learning, love your patients, love your partners, love the staff around you – even the cranky ones! The more we seek to understand each other and treat each other with compassion, the easier things get for all of us, and where true healing is born. Also, something I wish I learned sooner, it’s so important to take care of yourself. The better you take care of yourself, the better you will be able to show up for the people you care for, in all aspects of your life. Never be afraid to ask for help. We are all human, we all need help at different times in different ways, and asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness, but of true strength. And most importantly LAUGH! Have fun! There are a lot of reasons to laugh and take advantage of every single one of those opportunities!

Yes! It seems like the generation entering medicine now has a more balanced approach to building their career while focusing on self-care. The old adage that you can’t pour from an empty cup definitely applies at all levels of the healthcare workforce Particularly for women! Speaking of self-care, what are some hobbies or passions outside of medicine that bring you joy or help you unwind?

Dr. Raju: I love spending time with my kids, cooking, traveling, and trying new activities.

My favorite hobbies exactly! And if you’re open to sharing, what is one thing that many people may not know about you?

Dr. Raju: I love plants and love to garden! I am a Bexar county Master Gardener and volunteer at the botanical gardens regularly. My family gardened even in Canada in the cold inhospitable weather conditions! My first jobs were with Agriculture and Agri food Canada and crop development with organic pesticide research.

Just when I thought I couldn’t love you more! I started gardening a few years ago and have truly fallen in love with the whole process. I mostly make it up as I go along and call my Master Gardener Mother-in-Law for advice. Now I know I can compare notes with you as well! But back to business, I understand you’re starting a new practice, can you tell me about that?

Dr. Raju: YES! We have officially started our new practice: Pediatric Urology of San Antonio. I am so happy to announce that along with me, Dr. Marks and Dr. Prieto are starting a new practice and we will be adding a fourth surgeon soon! Together we cover the full breadth and depth of pediatric urology and are expanding our practice rapidly. We have significant experience with Robotic and minimally invasive surgery. We have locations in the Medical Center, Stone Oak, and New Braunfels! We will be expanding to more locations over the next year.

That is so exciting for you, your partners and the San Antonio and New Braunfels communities!Congratulations on embarking on this new journey and I wish you only the best. Thank you for taking the time to visit with me today and I look forward to seeing what 2025 has in store for you…and what you’re planting in your spring garden!

The post More Than Medicine: Meet Dr. Gaayana Raju first appeared on Waechter Consulting.

What do professional baseball, playing the drums and the Pittsburgh Steelers have in common? DeSilva Dermatology, of course!

Join us as I spend time with Dr. Holly Volz, Dr. John Martin and Dr. Thushan DeSilva as they share their passion for medicine, their thoughts on the healthcare industry and their advice for the next generation of physicians.

I’m honored to have you as the very first More Than Medicine feature physicians. Thanks for taking the time to share your insight with me today.

First things first, can you share what inspired you to pursue a career in medicine? What drives your passion?

Dr. Volz: I have wanted to be a physician for as long as I can remember. Both my mother and grandfather are physicians, so it may be in my blood! Practicing medicine allows me to do what I love and do what I do best – use my mind, my hands, and my words to provide healing and hope to my patients (and their skin)!

Dr. Martin: An interest in science in biology is what inspired me to pursue a career in medicine. Helping people and learning about advances in medicine is what drives my passion.

Dr. DeSilva: Honestly, I was surrounded by medicine as both my parents were doctors (Dad-ER, Mom-Family Medicine). As I followed their path I loved learning about the human body. Now, seeing how we improve the lives of patients drives my passion.

I love that family legacy is a key part of the driving force of your passion for healthcare. How has your perspective changed over the years? Would you choose the same specialty if you had it to do over?

Dr. Volz: The longer you practice medicine, the more you realize it really is an art – in addition to a lot of science, of course. It is so important to treat the whole person, not just the disease. It is equally as important to consider each patient’s personal preferences and life circumstances, as well. And, yes, I would choose dermatology again and again. It is so much fun and offers so much variety – skin cancer, acne, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, botox, fillers, surgery, and lots and lots of rashes! Never a dull moment!

Dr. Martin: I have become more appreciative of the new treatments and therapeutic options that have developed over the years. It’s really exciting to have new modalities to take care of patients. Yes, I would absolutely pick the same specialty.

Dr. DeSilva: I consider myself very fortunate for getting into dermatology as it has turned out better than I expected. I love what I do. It’s a combination of enjoying dermatology and working with the staff we are surrounded by. I appreciate the visual aspect of dermatology rather than relying on tests.

Wow, three for three for making the right choice with Dermatology! Speaking of new treatments and therapeutic options, the healthcare landscape has changed significantly over the years. If you could make one significant change to the current healthcare system, what would it be?

Dr. Volz: Get rid of third party payers. Our insurance system is failing us. We need a simple, transparent, direct doctor-to-patient healthcare system. I would love to barter, too! If only I could accept fresh eggs and milk in exchange for a visit!

Dr. Martin: If I could make one significant change to the healthcare system, it would be to make medications more affordable and accessible to patients.

Dr. DeSilva: We have so many great treatments for various conditions but access to medications due to costs and coverage make treating these conditions arduous and time consuming. The system is broken and must be fixed from drug costs to coverage.

Sounds like a return to traditional doctor patient relationship models might be what our country needs. I, for one, would be all in for a barter system Dr. Volz! Knowing what you know now, what advice would you give to young physicians or those considering a career in medicine?

Dr. Volz: Don’t go into medicine for prestige or money. Do it because you can’t fathom spending your life doing anything else, because you love serving people, and because you want to be a lifelong learner. Medicine is truly a calling. The best doctors are committed to always doing the right thing for each patient.

Dr. Martin: Try to enjoy the experience during your training. It’s a long road but can be very rewarding. I also suggest trying to find a field that you enjoy, luckily there are many options in healthcare.

Dr. DeSilva: Make sure you love what you do. It is a long commitment (around 12 years after high school) if you don’t love going to work afterward. I would also recommend a business degree so you can invest and earn rather than work to survive.

They always say, they don’t teach business in medical school! Sounds like exploring education in business in addition to medicine could be a good investment. Speaking of going outside of medicine, can you share an example of a time when you went beyond traditional medical duties to make a difference?

Dr. Volz: I’d like to think I go above and beyond for my patients on a regular basis, so that it’s the rule, rather than the exception. I often call my patients personally when I get their results back to talk through what it means and how we might proceed with treatment. I also prioritize picking up the phone to call the patient’s other specialists (i.e. their primary care doctors, rheumatologists, oncologists, etc.) to make sure everyone on the patient’s care team is on the same page. If I don’t know the answer, I will be sure to figure it out and make a follow up phone call to my patient to close the loop. I never want to seem rushed when I am with my patients, either. Each person is deserving of my full attention and care!

Dr. Martin: For many years I volunteered my time at medical clinics to help patients who couldn’t afford medical care.

I love that! Being willing to give of your time, even though medicine takes so much of it, is truly commendable. Are there any causes or initiatives outside of healthcare that you actively support or are passionate about?

Dr. Volz: My husband and I are very involved at our church, Currey Creek, here in Boerne. We are also part of an organization called “August Heart” which is a free heart screening program offered to teens in an effort to reduce the incidence of sudden cardiac death in youth.

Dr. Martin: We support Saint Jude Children’s Hospital. They do a great job of taking care of children who not only need great medical care but compassion as well.

Sounds like each of you are giving back to the community in your own ways. What are some hobbies or passions outside of medicine that bring you joy or help you unwind?

Dr. Volz: My primary job (and passion!) is my family. Nothing brings me greater joy – or refinement- than loving and serving my husband and three precious children. I love nurturing their growing minds, staying involved at their school, and serving together in our church and community. I also love to read, travel, and exercise. My favorite way to unwind is to share a great meal and meaningful conversation at the dinner table with those I love!

Dr. Martin: I enjoy spending time with my family, playing guitar, fishing, and spending time outdoors.

Dr. DeSilva: Spending time with family. I love skiing, running, biking, especially with my family. The biggest joy is watching my three kids grow, mature and begin their journey in life.

Maybe each of you are fostering the next great generation of physicians among your kids! You’re certainly setting a great example for how to prioritize work-life balance.

Final question, what is one thing that many people may not know about you?

Dr. Volz: I was born and raised in San Antonio, so I haven’t gone too far from home! I did, however, get the chance to live in several other parts of the country while my husband was playing professional baseball for both the Boston Red Sox and Kansas City Royals organizations.

Dr. Martin: One thing many people may not know about me is that I really like music. I play guitar and drums. I also enjoy going to see concerts.

Dr. DeSilva: I am a Steelers fan… actually my patients know after seeing me even one time.

Wow, two out of three I would NOT have guessed! Dr. D, there’s no hiding you’re a Steelers fan, but I think I might need to hear more about Dr. Martin playing the drums! And I had no idea that Dr. Volz was a professional baseball first lady!

Thank you again for spending time with me today and for sharing your love of medicine and commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of your patients. All three of you embody what it means to be More Than Medicine and our community is blessed to have you.

The post More Than Medicine: DeSilva Dermatology first appeared on Waechter Consulting.
